How many days do you need in Madeira?+
Seven days is the comfortable minimum to see the south, the north and the mountains without driving all day. Ten days lets you add Porto Santo or slow the pace right down.
Do you need a car in Madeira?+
For a free-roaming trip, yes. Roads are steep but well maintained, and distances are short even if travel times are longer than the map suggests. I plan the itinerary around real drive times.
When is the best time to go?+
Madeira is mild all year. Spring and early autumn give the best balance of warmth, light and quiet trails; summer is busiest; winter stays pleasant on the south coast.
